02 — The opening, benchmarked
The Financial Brand's benchmark for a successful new branch is $1 million in new deposits every month. In its first month, this branch brought in $5,008,271, more than 5 times the benchmark.
"What should we expect?"
This might be the number one question asked within a bank, especially around a new project or investment.
This is especially true of a new branch. The industry has little consensus on whether banks should be expanding or contracting. When do you open a branch? Where? There's a whole industry around prognosticating that.
And after those are answered comes that magic question: what should we expect?
The Financial Brand Forum has given us an answer: a successful de novo branch should add $1 million in new money deposits each month. If you hit that pace, your branch should break even by year three.
We believe the best way to predict the future is to create it. That's why when one client de novo'd into a new, small market in late 2024, we made sure to have marketing in place. We overlaid the area with brand messaging. This gave consumers a reason to consider a new bank in a sea of sameness. Before the opening, we ran a direct mail campaign focused on new account acquisition. And we kept the marketing running.
A strong opening is $1 million in deposits.
A Mabus Agency opening? More than $5 million in new deposits.
The branch opened December 19, 2024. In its first month, it brought in $5,008,271 across 250 new accounts.
Leadership set a two-year deposit goal for the branch: $25 million by December 31, 2026. The branch crossed that mark in September 2025, fifteen months ahead of schedule. By July 2026, with five months still remaining before the original deadline, deposits stood at $36,151,870, 45 percent past the original goal.
Account growth tells the same story. The branch now serves more than 1,200 consumer accounts and 400 business accounts, generating an average of more than $22,000 in deposits per account.
Location, staffing, and timing all mattered. Marketing built the introduction and kept the brand in front of the community every month since. That combination is what turns a strong opening into eighteen straight months of deposits running, on average, 2.64 times the industry's own benchmark for success.

The goal line below shows how early, and how far, this branch outran its own target.
Leadership set a target of $25 million in deposits within two years of opening. The branch crossed that line in September 2025, fifteen months ahead of the December 2026 deadline, and reached $36.15 million by July 2026.
Eighteen months after opening, the branch has grown from 250 accounts to more than 1,600, with deposit growth continuing to outpace the original plan.
